The morning pages were developed by writer and artist, Julia Cameron. She outlines exactly what the morning pages are in her book, The Artist’s Way. Simply put, the morning pages are three pages, stream of consciousness, first thing in the morning.

You write your heart out until you reach three pages. Then you stop and close your book. You don’t read your morning pages. At least not for the first eight weeks.

You don’t worry about writing well with your morning pages. They aren’t meant to be read by anyone, except eventually by yourself. Think of the morning pages as a brain dump. Get everything thats in your head, out on the paper.

It is critical you do the morning pages everyday. Do not skip days.

Think of the morning pages as a meditation. It’s just you and the paper.

Commit to doing your morning pages first thing in the morning. Before you do anything else. This way, you will always have time for them. If you have to wake up twenty minutes early, do it. It is worth it.

You can use the morning pages to brainstorm ideas to blog about. Or, you can write poetry. You can literally do anything. As long as it is stream of consciousness. Don’t overthink it. Just write.

Plan to do the morning pages for at least two months. You will be surprised by the creativity you unleash. The morning pages work. Give them a try!
